What is a utility knife used for and what makes it an ideal tool to keep? Let’s find out in this article.

Utility knife, as suggested by its name is an all-purpose kitchen knife that falls in between the paring or peeling knife and Chef’s knife. It has the best of both worlds for instance like a chef’s knife it has a wide blade as well as it is handy like a paring knife.  

A utility knife can be used for many purposes like cutting, peeling, dicing, chopping, slicing, mincing, coring, and julienning. In a household, it is the main knife used for cutting almost everything from vegetables to fruit to meat to herbs. 

Note :

Not to be confused with multi-purpose utility knife also known as Swiss army knife, utility Knife is a kitchen knife and usually the most commonly used knife in the kitchen in a household.

Being the all-purpose knife is most commonly used for 

All-Purpose cutting knife

It is used for cutting all sorts of vegetables, fruits, and herbs in any way possible. It is good at dicing, chopping slicing garlic, ginger onions, carrots, and every other vegetable that can fit a palm. It has a blade similar to the chef’s knife so it got the same finesse in cutting.

Usage on meat

A utility knife can handle soft meat like fish and chicken fillets well as long as they are small. it can cut smoothly through pieces of white meat. Similarly, red meat small pieces can be handled well by it, however for bigger tasks and larger portions, we recommend using rather specialist knives such as the legendary butcher knife and the good old cleaver. Other than these uses, it can also be used to remove the layer of fat from the meat. 

Peeling and Scoop Cutting

A utility knife can be used for peeling purposes especially bigger fruits and vegetables but it is not very good at it. It is very good scope cutting like with pumpkin, or watermelon, in it you will cut a slice from the main thing scoop out the marrow from it.

Coring and removing seeds

A utility knife can be used for coring and removing seeds from fruits and vegetables using its pointy tip. It can also be good to remove the spine from the fish and the cartilage from the chicken. 

Shape and Design

A utility knife blade can be anywhere between 4 and 7 inches long made typically from stainless stain. It also has a pointed blade and from its spine down to the edge it has a uniform thickness, it has a heel as well as a bigger tip than the pairing knife. Normally the fancy ones have handles made of wood but cheaper ones have plastic handles. It normally has a flat butt to crush the garlic.
